With the great success of the Center’s biennial exhibition, Present Tense 2009: Chinese Character, in collaboration with Kearny Street Workshop, we would like to engage the community in a casual, lively, and fun panel discussion regarding the relationship between contemporary art, community building, and public space as a venue for the arts. Among other topics, we will discuss the impact on artists, the community audience, and how exhibitions like Present Tense can bring new and provocative energy into the public scene.

The Chinese Culture Center and Kearny Street Workshop invite you to join in on a discussion among five artists about the development of their art practices, their influences and how they work within their communities.

Nancy Hom is an artist, writer, organizer, and arts administrator with over 30 years of experience in the non-profit arts. As an artist, curator, and organizer, she has worked in many communities in San Francisco, including the South of Market, Manilatown, Chinatown, Japantown, Western Addition, and the Mission. Nancy served as executive director of Kearny Street Workshop from 1995-2003.

Leland Wong, artist, illustrator, and photographer, is best known for the silkscreen posters he has designed and produced for more than thirty five years, particularly the series of posters he produced annually for the Nihonmachi Street Fair from 1974-2004. He is the owner of A-Town Graphics, a one-man photography and graphic design business.

Lenore Chinn’s paintings explore the super-realistic depiction of a wide spectrum of people of color, lesbians and same sex couples. Her portraits documenting the historical evolution of San Francisco’s queer community challenge the social conventions that currently constitute the racialized order of things. Lenore is a founding member of Lesbians in the Visual Arts, Queer Cultural Center and the Asian American Women Artists Association.

Choppy Oshiro, graphic designer and illustrator, created the promotional material for the Chinese Culture Center’s exhibition Icons of Presence: Asian American Activist Art. Her work was recently featured in Dirty Work: artists eye domestic labor at Kearny Street Workshop.

Richard Godinez is an ex-political cartoonist who creates large-scale oil paintings and pastels that protest imperialism and globalization. Richard is an associate professor of visual art at Diablo Valley College.

Robynn Takayama (moderator) is an award-winning audio producer. She was segment producer for Crossing East, a Peabody-awarded radio documentary on Asian immigration. Her art projects have been presented through video, web, and gallery installation in San Francisco, Berkeley, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, the Chinese community is powerful, yet divided by immigration status, language access, and acculturation issues. Come to this KQED screening at the Chinese Culture Center followed by a panel discussion to facilitate the first-ever dialogue between Newcomers and Chinese Americans. Simultaneous Cantonese and English translation provided.

“Different generations of immigrants have vastly different perspectives and concerns, yet we all call ourselves Chinese,” said Chinese Culture Center Executive Director Sabina Chen. “As a large extended family, how do we communicate across generations and reach some common ground as a community? How do we address varying, sometimes conflicting interests with respect and understanding?”

Sabina Chen, Executive Director of Chinese Culture Center was interviewed on Comcast "Inside City Limit".

Ushering the traditional art form of brush painting into modernity, this exhibit features 18 preeminent contemporary artists from all over the world. A traveling exhibition widely shown in Taiwan, China, New York, and Chicago, it is a collection of major works that represents new directions in this ancient medium.

Curated by art critic Daojian Pi, the installation at the Chinese Culture Center Gallery is designed by one of the featured artists, Lampo Leong. Works will be shown by the following renowned artists:

Among the distinguished group of artists included, Xingjian Gao of France is also a Nobel Laureate in Literature. Professor Kuo-sung Liu from Taiwan, whose work will also be shown, is the leader and one of the most important artists of modern brush painting movement in the Chinese art world. Professor Lampo Leong, from the University of Missouri-Columbia, is both the installation designer and a featured artist, who is influential in bridging the gaps between Western painting and brush painting, artistic creation and digital technologies.

In 1989 Jiang Zhu Jiu, 9-Dan, the number two player in China at the time, immigrated to the United States. He was shortly followed by his wife Rui Nai Wei, 9-Dan. Mr. Jiang quickly went about working toward raising the level of Goe playing in the US by providing lectures and training videos. With his help San Francisco and the Bay area were able to get an endowment to promote Goe in the US from the Ing Chang-Ki Goe Foundation of Taiwan. The American headquarters of Ing’s Goe Foundation is now located in Menlo Park, Ca.

In 1992, in honor of the great efforts that Jiang Zhu Jiu made in promoting goe in the United States we began hosting an annual tournament in his name. It quickly became the largest American tournament other than the US Goe Championship. The tournament has started many fascinating trends over the years. In many years it attracts some professional players from outside the United States in the open section, thus giving the top American amateurs a unique opportunity to play tournament games with professional players. Originally, the tournament had a youth section for children under age 18; but that section got so large (over 150 players) that we now have a separate youth tournament twice a year.

Young players are still welcome this tournament and many of the strongest players are now under age 18. The highlight of 2006 was a 15 year old boy from New York winning the United States Goe championship.
